C., FRIDAY, SEPT. 4, 1942 CURB REPORTER Weather Thursday: High 85, low 58 ... . Marion Smith is now a corporal at Hawthorne, Calif. Polk county soldiers are making good in the service of their coun try. Polk is probably represented by more officers and first class soldiers in proportion to popula tion than any other section of the country. We have a brigadier general, colonel, three majors, two captains, a dozen lieutenants, two dozen sergeants, an equal num ber of corporals and it only takes a little time to make them every one at least a first class private. In the navy and marines the captain^, commanders, lieutenants, /*Ssigns and petty officers are also voting great work for a mountain country.Bill McFarland and W. D. Hines, Jr., have ar rived from Wilmington for a few days’ visit. They have merit badg es of achievement given them for helping to build ships at great speed. The title of the metal badge reads: “Ships for Victory”. .... Now with our men making progress on the fighting fronts and others building ships and equipment to do the fighting it is up to us to buy bonds and donate our scrap metal and grease fats. Have you picked up that old piece of scrap iron and dumped it on the pile opposite the Chevrolet place? It will help, so will strain _Continued on Page Two_ HOME FROM CHINA Miss Bertha Smith, sister of Claud O. Smith of the Tryon Motor Co., and a Baptist mission ary to China for the past 25 years, arrived in America last week on the Grisholm with Am bassador Grew and the other Americans who were exchanged fort Japanese nationals in this country. This was Miss Smith's first visit to America in 3 years. She arrived at her home in Cow pens, S. C., this week, and in a long-distance telephone conversa tion with her brother at Tryon, she said that Cowpens looked mighty good. to her. ANNUAL HINES REUNION The annual Hines reunion will be held at Green River church near Green’s Creek the first Sun day in September. The reunion was held there last year, and most of those attending seemed to feel that the location was con venient for most of those con cerned. We hope the day—next Sunday—will be remembered by all Hines friends and kin, and are looking forward to a fine day. OPEN MONDAY Although Monday, Labor Day, is a National Holiday, Postmaster George D. Cooksey, states that the Tryon Post Office will be open Monday morning from 8 to 12 for regular business. The Triyon office starts closing on Saturday after ' noons this week, and to be closed from Saturday noou to Tuesday morning was too long.
